Why do alkali metals catches fire when put in water

Dear Student, Alkali metals are highly reactive and they readily catch fire when they come in contact with water. They react violently even with cold water forming hydroxides with the liberation of hydrogen gas, the heat evolved is sufficient for the hydrogen to catch fire. Regards,
