Question
Why do alkali metals tarnish on exposure to air?
Open in App
Solution
Alkali metals are the first elements in every period.
These metals have the highest atomic size and lowest ionization potential in their respective periods.
Due to this, the chemical reactivity of alkali metals is highest.
On exposure to air, alkali metals vigorously react with air, moisture, and Carbon dioxide present in the air forming its oxides and hydroxides.
The formation of oxides and hydroxides results into tarnishing.
