Question

Why do amines have higher boiling point than hydrocarbons?

Open in App
Solution

Boiling point of amines

  • According to the concept of polarization caused by the difference in the electronegativity , C-N bond in amines is more polar than a C-C bond in hydrocarbons.
  • Amines are involved in the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds.
  • Intermolecular hydrogen bonding provide stability to the amines and it require more energy to break the bonds and hence amines have higher boiling point than the hydrocarbons.
