Question

Why do arteries have thick and elastic walls?

Open in App
Solution

Arteries:

They are a type of blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood away from the heart.

Thick walls of arteries:

Thick walls of arteries help them to resist the pressure of the flow of blood in them.

Elastic walls of arteries:

  1. The elastic layer allows stretching and absorbs pressure.
  2. The walls stretch and recoil in response to pumping, thus peaks in pressure are absorbed.
