Question

Why do electrostatic lines not form closed loops

Open in App
Solution

Dear student, The electric field lines start from positive charge and end at negative charge. Thus, an electric field line does not form closed loop as it terminates into a negative charge. If there is a single point charge of either a positive charge or a negative one, there is no chance of forming a closed loop as the electric field lines are either radially outwards or inwards respectively and the lines being straight, there is no deviation in the path of electric field lines as there is no other charge present near it.
