Question

Why do fluids exert pressure on the walls of the containing vessel ?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,
Answer to your question is given below:
In a fluid, the molecules are in random motion. So each molecule is vibrating and hence collides with each other. Likewise the molecules in contact with the container also collides with the container walls. As the intermolecular spaces between particles in a gas are very large, they move about randomly at very high speeds. Due to this the particles hit each other and the walls of the container. The pressure exerted by the gas is because of this force exerted by gas particles per unit area on the walls of the container.
