In general,Objects expand when heated because the heat 'gives' molecules more energy, so they move around more. This vibration, as molecules are pushed further apart, is manifested as a larger volume.
Liquid expands more than solid on heating , the atom and molecules in liquid have more freedom to move about than in solid. because there is more intermolecular space in liquid than solid & less intermolecular forces of attraction than solids. where as in solids the molecules are tightly packed so less intermolecular space and strong intermolecular force of attraction.
Heat causes the molecules to move faster(heat energy is converted to kienetic energy ).
So comparing with liquids, solids expands less on heating & liquid expands more.
