Question

Why do lysosome enzymes not digest lysosomes?

Open in App
Solution

Lysosomes:

  1. Lysosomes contain hydrolytic enzymes.
  2. They cannot digest themselves due to the glycocalyx protective layer.
  3. It is formed by the carbohydrate moiety of the membrane proteins and lipids.
  4. The membrane protein and lipid are highly glycosylated as a result making it resistant to digestion by hydrolases and protecting the phospholipid bilayer.
