Question

Why do metals expand on heating while other solids do not?

Open in App
Solution

  • When metals are heated, the kinetic energy of a particle of metals increases, and its atoms and molecules move apart. As a result, each atom will take up more space due to their movement so the metal will expand.
  • Some other solids have differences in the forces between their atoms/molecules so they do not expand.
