Why do moss plants produce very large number of male gametes? Give one reason. What are these gametes called?

In order to increase the chances of fertilization, moss plants produces a large number of male gametes. As they release male gamete in water medium through which they travels to female gametes for fertilization, there are chances of damage of gametes. Male gametes are called as pollen grains, produced by the antheridia. Female gametes are called as eggs, produced in archegonia.
