Why do most of the ionic compounds exist in a solid state while the covalent compounds are mostly in a gaseous or a liquid state?
1.Ionic compounds are those which are formed by the transfer of electrons from an electropositive element to an electronegative element which results in the formation of cation and anion.
2.Cations and anions in the ionic compounds are held by the strong electrostatic forces which hold the oppositely charged ions in fixed positions resulting in solid crystals.
Ex: Sodium chloride
3.Covalent compounds are those which are formed by the equal sharing of electrons between two similar electronegative elements.
4.Atoms or molecules in covalent compounds are held by weak Van der waal's forces or London dispersion forces, due to which they exist as either liquids or gases.
Ex: Chlorine.
