Question

Why do noble gases not take part in a chemical reaction?

Open in App
Solution

Noble gases

  • Some elements don't combine with other elements. Helium, Neon, Argon, Krypton, Xenon, and Radon elements. They are referred to as noble gases or inert gases because they are doing not react with other elements to make compounds.
  • The atoms of noble gases already have complete outer shells, so they have no tendency to lose, gain, or share electrons. This is why the noble gases are inert and don't participate in chemical reactions.
  • The general electronic configuration of noble gas is ns2np6 except helium.
  • Example: Neon atomic number is 10, so the electron distribution is 2,8. Therefore, the outermost shell is completely filled because it contains 8 electrons.
