Question

Why do Noble gasses have high ionization energy?

Open in App
Solution

Ionization Energy: The amount of energy required to remove an electron from a gaseous atom is known as ionization energy.

Group 18 elements are known as noble gases due to their inert nature.

The ionization energy of Noble gases:

  • The general electronic configuration of noble gases is ns2np6.
  • So, the noble gases have a complete octet.
  • Due to stable electronic configuration, it is difficult to remove an electron from fully filled orbital.
  • Hence, the ionization energy of noble gases is very high.
