Question

Why do oils remain in a liquid state even in winters?

Open in App
Solution

Oils remain liquid In winters because:

  • Oils have low melting points
  • Various fatty acids are also present and they remain in a liquid state even in winter.
  • Oil is denser than water.
  • Vegetable oil consists of molecules in long chains called lipids, usually with a mixture of molecules of different sizes and shapes.
  • That makes it hard for the oil to form a regular crystal, suppressing ordinary freezing.
  • In oil, the intermolecular force is less as they have a low melting point.

Hence oil remains a liquid state in winter.
