Question

Why do plant cells build cell plates?

Open in App
Solution

Cell plates:

  1. Cell division is a fundamental part of life.
  2. Without cell division, living organisms do not grow.
  3. Cytokinesis is the last step of cell division and is uniquely different in plants from that in animals due to the presence of cell walls in plants.
  4. Compared to animal cells, plant cells are much stiffer.
  5. They have a rigid cell wall that has high internal pressure.
  6. As a result, plant cells split into two by building new structures down the mid-section of the cell.
  7. These structures are referred to as cell plates.
  8. Cell plates are composed of the plasma membrane and other cell wall components released in vesicles, that divide the cell into two.
