Question

Why do solids have a shape and volume?

Open in App
Solution

  1. In solids, particles are tightly packed, and hence the inter-molecular space is very small.
  2. The inter-molecular forces of attraction in solids are very strong.
  3. High inter-molecular force and negligible inter-molecular space do not allow the molecules to leave their mean position.
  4. They can only vibrate in a fixed position.
  5. Because of this position, solids are rigid and have definite shapes and volume.
