Question

Why do solids liquids and gases differ in their physical state

Open in App
Solution

This is due to their intermolecular distance and energy content.
Gases have higher energy cotent than liquids which has higher than solids.
Due to this the intermolecular distance is high and thus the molecules cant strongly bond together in gases.
This effect is comparbly lower in liquids and doesnot ecist in solids as they can form strong molecular bonds.
Thus gas molecules fly and collide with each other forming the air around us and many other gases produced in chemical reactions. Liquids have little higher bond strength and thus does not fly apart but doesnt stay in place. they randomly move.
Solids have much higher bond strength and thus have high mechanical stiffness.
