Solution

Answer:
  • Some people need to use a dialysis machine because of their kidney failure. Such people are unable to filter their blood by themselves. Hence, they need a dialysis machine for the removal of harmful nitrogenous wastes out of their body.
  • Working of a dialysis machine: The blood taken from the artery of the individual’s arm is made to stream in a dialysis machine that consists of long selectively permeable tubes (made up of cellulose membrane). These tubes are coiled in a tank full of dialysing solution.
  • The dialysis solution consists of glucose, water and other salts in a similar concentration as that in the blood.

  • As the blood moves through the dialysing solution, the majority of the harmful wastes like urea passes through the selectively permeable tubes into the dialysis solution. And the cleaned blood is transferred back to the vein of the patient’s arm.
