Question

Why do some solids have a high melting point while some melt at a low temperature?

Open in App
Solution

  • Nonpolar molecules that are symmetrical and small (H2, N2, O2, F2 ) have weak intermolecular forces and form molecular solids with quite low melting points (below −200 °C).
  • Substances that are larger, nonpolar molecules have stronger intermolecular forces and melt at higher temperatures so their high melting point.
