Question

Why do some water pipes burst in winters?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Water shows anomalous expansion on temperatures between 0-4 Degree Celcius.
During extreme winters when the temperature is nearly 0 degree celcius unlike other fluids water expands in volume and thus causes an increase in pressure inside the water pipe. There comes a stage where the pipe cannot hold any more pressure and thus it bursts.
