The Northern Plains are heavily populated because of the following reasons:

• Northern plains are fertile because of the alluvial deposits brought by the rivers. This fertile soil supports agriculture and thus can feed a large population.​
• The plains are drained by rivers like Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra thus there is availability of fresh water as well. ​
• The flat lands support the settlements, establishment of transport networks like roads and railways, etc. thus overall making the place conducive for settling of large populations. ​
