Question

Why do the electrostatic field lines not form closed loops?

Open in App
Solution

Electrostatic field lines never form loops because they do not converge at only one point as in the case with magnetic field lines. They depend on positive and negative charges that can extend to infinity in any particular direction. For it to form a closed loop, both positive and negative charge should exist at the same point, which is impossible.
