Question

Why does the immune response of old people get weak?

Open in App
Solution

Immune response:

  1. The immune response is the process by which the host immune system recognizes foreign antigens and tries to attack and destroy such particles.
  2. Immune response reactions become weak in old people as the immune system begins to deteriorate.
  3. The immune system fails to distinguish between self from nonself cells and gives rise to autoimmune disorders.
  4. T cells responsible for memory-based immune reaction respond slowly to antigens and fewer cells are available for interaction with the antigen.
  5. Old people have fewer complement proteins and thus cannot rapidly fight against bacterial infections.
  6. With the progression of age, bone marrow and thymus underproduce B and T cells, and thus immune reactions are less efficient and slow.
