Question

Why do the molecules move freely in liquids?

Open in App
Solution

Liquids: Liquids have a definite mass and volume but lack of a fixed shape of their own. It takes up the shape of the containing vessels.

It can be compressed to an extent. For example, Milk, water, ink, etc.

  • Liquids have less density as compared to solids as intermolecular spaces are more in liquids.
  • So, for the same volume mass of liquid is less as compared to solid.
  • Thus liquids have lesser density.
  • Due to the weak intermolecular force of attraction in liquids their molecules are not tightly packed. And it does not have any fixed shape like solids.
  • Liquids have a definite volume. but not so strong as to fix them into definite positions (as in solids).
