Question

Why do veins have valves but not arteries?

Open in App
Solution

The presence of valves in veins:

  1. Blood vessels make up the heart.
  2. They are an essential component of our circulatory system.
  3. It aids in the circulation of blood.
  4. Our blood vessels are classified into three types: arteries, veins, and capillaries.
  5. Arteries aid in the removal of oxygenated blood from the heart.
  6. The interior layers are made of epithelial cells.
  7. These cells help in blood flow.
  8. Blood pressure will be high inside the arteries.
  9. As a result, blood will flow in one direction.
  10. It cannot return to the heart.
  11. So valves are not required in arteries.
  12. However, veins are not the same.
  13. Veins help to transport blood from various parts of our bodies back to our hearts.
  14. The blood that flows through veins is under less pressure.
  15. Hence, there is always the possibility of backflow.
  16. Veins have valves to prevent this backflow of blood.
  17. Valves ensure that blood flows only in one direction through veins.
  18. Therefore, veins have valves, not the arteries.
