why do virus infected cells secrete proteins called interferons?and how it protect non infected cells from further viral infection

Interferons are chemical signalling molecules that are released in response to viruses, bacteria, parasites etc. A virus infected cells release interferons in response to virus infection and the released interferons thus inhibit the adjacent cells from virus infection thus acting as anti-viral defense molecules.
