Question

Why do we classify hydrocarbons are saturated and unsaturated

Open in App
Solution

We classify the hydrocarbons as saturated and unsatureted on the basis of the number of bonds present between te carbon atoms. For single bonds between the carbon atoms the hydrocarbon is satureted and for double bonds between the carbon atoms the hydrocarbon is unsatureted. These are classified based upon the bonds between the carbon atoms this is because the property of the hydrocarbons are different in both the types. The hydrocarbons are called satureted because maximum of four atoms can be bonded to a carbon atom and so its the saturation of bonding. They have different process when they react with other compunds suh as alcohols ,halides or many other substances and hence they are separated into two groups.
