Why do we get hiccups?

Open in App
Solution

Hiccups:

  1. The majority of simple cases of hiccups occur as a result of eating too much or too quickly.
  2. Our stomach becomes distended as a result of fasting, causing irritation.
  3. This causes the diaphragm to contract, as it does when we breathe in, resulting in hiccups.
  4. Hiccups can occur as a result of a disruption in the nerve pathways from the brain to the muscles involved.
  5. This helps to explain why hiccups can occur in response to temperature changes or emotional situations.
  6. This is also why a sudden shock can sometimes stop an attack.
