Question

Why do we include a leguminous crop during crop rotation?

Open in App
Solution

Crop rotation:

  1. It is a practice of growing different types of crops sequentially on the same piece of land in a specific period of time.
  2. Legumes fix the nitrogen directly from the air to form nitrogen compounds and increase the nitrogen level of the soil.
  3. They do so because these plants have nodes in their roots where the nitrogen-fixing bacteria reside.
  4. These microbes help in fixing the nitrogen in the soil.
  5. This is the reason why leguminous crops during crop rotation maintain the nitrogen level of the soil.
