Among the different components of a mixture, many substances are harmful or not useful for us. To remove these harmful or not so useful components we need to separate them and for which we employ many separation techniques like handpicking, filtration, distillation etc. For example:
(a) Tea leaves are separated from the liquid tea with a strainer while serving tea.
(b) Stone pieces, which are harmful when ingested, are separated from the wheat, rice or pulses by the method of handpicking.
