Why do we prefer democracy as compared to any other form of government?

India is a multi-lingual, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-religious country. Democracy was the best form to accommodate such range of diversity and maintain unity. Also, Indian leadership and the population had understanding of such a form of government due to the British rule.
