Dams are the barriers built across a river or stream for storage of water we build large dams for storage of adequate water for irrigation + other purposes. storage provides insurance against uncertainty due to climatic variability like drought. The majority of dams built are multi purpose in nature, but irrigation is the largest uses of waters withdrawn.
