Question

Why do we use sulfuric acid in batteries?

Open in App
Solution

Application of sulfuric acid in batteries

  1. Sulfuric acid is used as an electrolyte in lead-acid batteries. During the discharge of lead-acid batteries, the lead sulfate is formed on both the electrodes because of the reaction with sulphuric acid.
  2. When the battery charges, lead sulfate gets converted to lead and lead oxide by releasing the sulphuric acid into the electrolyte.

Hence, sulfuric acid is used as an electrolyte in batteries.
