Question

Why do well-watered plants transpire more during sunny and windy days than in the cool and calm mornings? How is transpiration different from evaporation?

Solution

Well watered plants transpire more on Sunny and Windy days as compared to cool and calm mornings because external factors affect the opening and closing of stomata. When stomata are open then transpiration occurs, when stomata are closed transpiration does not occur.
Factors affecting transpiration (stomatal opening) are:
1. Light
2. Temperature
3. Wind speed
4. Humidity
Hence when hight temperatures, adequate sunlight and high windspeed are available, more transpiration will take place.
Evaporation is the phenomenon in which water converts into water vapour from any water bodies or sources.
Transpiration is a special process occuring in plants in which water vapours are released from the stomata into the atmosphere.
