Question

Why do wet clothes take a long time to dry when the humidity in the air is high?

Solution

Step: 1: Definition of humidity:

  1. Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. If there is a lot of water vapor in the air, the humidity will be high.

Step: 2: Effect of humidity on the rate of evaporation:

  1. Humidity, or water vapor content of the air, also has an effect on evaporation.
  2. If humidity is high, it will be difficult for liquid to add more vapor in air as there is already a high amount of vapor, therefore with the increase in humidity, the rate of evaporation decreases, while the lower the relative humidity, the drier the air, and the higher the evaporation rate.

Thus, when humidity is high wet clothes take a long time to dry.
