Question

Why do you think food remains fresh for a long period in a refrigerator?

Solution

Refrigeration: It is a method of preserving food where food items are stored in cold conditions like refrigerators.

  • This method works by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms like bacteria, yeast and moulds.
  • Microorganisms responsible for the spoiling of food can function optimally within a certain temperature range.
  • When the temperature is lowered by refrigeration, these microbes cannot function properly and hence cannot spoil the food which results in fresh food for a longer time duration.
  • Examples: Milk, fruits, vegetables, etc. are stored by this method.
