Lok Adalat is an old form of conflict or dispute resolution system. Legal Services Authority organise Lok Adalats to provide free and legal services to those sections of society who find court’s long and exhausting procedures difficult. We still have Lok Adalats in our country because of the following benefits.
There is no court fee. It ensures that sections from weaker economic sections have access to justice.
Lok Adalats are flexible and disputes are settled in a speedy process. There is no strict application of procedural laws which are required in normal courts. People can have a direct interaction with the judge.
Lok Adalats promote equality by ensuring justice to weaker sections of the society, for example the poor, the disabled and uneducated. As justice is provided by elders of the village who are known to the people, conflict is resolved which saves time of the courts.
Cases like Matrimonial disputes, maintenance cases, harassment cases by husband and in-laws, domestic violence cases, all types of civil cases, land disputes, compoundable criminal cases can be solved efficiently through Lok Adalats.
