Question

Why does a balloon float and a solid iron ball sink?

Open in App
Solution

  1. A material will float or sink in water depending on the fact that whether its density is more or less than water.
  2. In a balloon, the air particles have space between them. So its average density becomes very less than the water and so it floats.
  3. In a solid iron ball, particles are tightly packed. So its density is more than water and so it sinks.
