Question

Why does a bar magnet always rest in the N-S direction, when suspended freely?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Earth has geographical north and south poles.
  2. When a bar magnet is suspended freely then the Magnetic north will be towards the geographical south while the Magnetic south pole will be attracted towards the geographical north.

Hence, as the opposite poles attract each other so the bar magnet always comes to rest in the North-South direction.
