Question

Why does a frameshift mutation usually cause more defects?

Open in App
Solution

Mutation:

  1. A mutation is an alteration of the DNA sequence of an organism.
  2. These transformations can result from mistakes in DNA replication during cell division, exposure to mutagens, or a viral disease.
  3. Germline mutations (that happen in eggs and sperm) can be passed down to the children, while somatic mutations (that happen in body cells) are not passed on.
  4. A frameshift mutation causes a change in the nucleotide sequence due to insertions or deletions in the same.
  5. When DNA repair mechanisms fail to repair the mutation in the DNA genome, it produces a wrong sequence of amino acids which in turn produces a wrong sequence in the protein causing problems.
