Question

Why does a marble floor feel colder in winter than a carpeted floor?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Heat energy will flow from hotter bodies to colder bodies.
  2. During winter surroundings will be colder and heat energy from bodies will be flowing to the surroundings and which makes a body feel cool.
  3. The heat energy from marbles can be easily transmitted to the surroundings by the conduction of heat since marble is a good conductor of heat.
  4. The carpet floor contains a large amount of trapped air, so the heat does not flow from the floor to the surroundings easily because air is a bad conductor of heat.
  5. The marble floor which transmits heat energy easily feels colder and the carpet floor which does not allow heat to transmit feels warmer.
