Why does a pencil partially dipped in water appear bent at the surface of the water?

  1. A pencil looks bent in water due to refraction.
  2. When the light comes from the part of the pencil which is dipped in the water out in the air, it bends away from the normal. The angle at which the light enters the eye of an observer cause this illusion.
