Question

Why does a Pyrex glass not crack when hot water is poured into it? Explain.

Solution

  1. Borosil or Pyrex glasses have very small expansion.
  2. Moreover, the articles prepared from them are very thin.
  3. Thus, when any hot or cold substance is poured into them, there is not much difference between the external and internal expansions.
  4. So, there is not sufficient strain to break the glass.
