Question

Why does a salt disappear when dissolved in water?

Open in App
Solution

Dissolution of salt in water:

  • When salt is added to water the particles of salt entering the water get separated due to a decrease in the interparticle force of attraction and get fitted into the interparticle space of water molecules.
  • The interparticle space between the water particles is more as compared to salt.
  • Salt also contains ions.
  • Water helps in separating these ions by decreasing the interionic forces allowing the salt to disperse throughout the water.
  • So, the particles of salt occupy the spaces in between the particles of water and hence get dissolved.
