Question

Why does a swimmer moves his hands backward while swimming in water?

Open in App
Solution

  1. This is because of Newton's third law of motion.
  2. When the swimmer moves his hands backwards, in doing so he pushes the water in the backward direction. This is an action force.
  3. So the water reacts back on the swimmer and pushes him in the forward direction.
