Question

Why does aerobic respiration produce more ATP?

Open in App
Solution

Aerobic respiration:

  1. The energy produced by aerobic respiration is significant and is stored in ATP molecules for usage by the organism.
  2. All multicellular species, such as birds, mammals, insects, and humans, are examples of organisms that engage in aerobic respiration.
  3. Aerobic respiration is much more efficient due to the high production of ATP.
  4. This high production occurs due to the complete breakdown of glucose into CO2 and Energy (ATP).
  5. In aerobic respiration 38 ATP is produced whereas in anaerobic respiration only 2 ATP is produced with the production of an additional side product like lactic acid or ethanol.
  6. Aerobic respiration is achieved through the utilization of oxygen and the release of a large amount of energy along with the side product of water.
  7. This kind of respiration takes place in the mitochondria.
  8. The release of water is also accompanied by the production of CO2 which is exhaled out.
