Question

Why does BF3 have a larger bond angle than IF3 even though IF3 has 2 electron pairs?

Open in App
Solution

Find the hybridisation of BF3 and IF3.For BF3H= 12[ No of valence electron of the central metal atom + no of surrounding atom - cation + anion] = 12[3 + 3 -0+0] = 3 = sp2 (planar trigonal)LP= H- no of surrounding atom =3 -3 =0For IF3H= 12[ No of valence electron of the central metal atom + no of surrounding atom - cation + anion] = 12[7+ 3 -0+0] = 5 = sp3d (planar bipyramid)LP= H- no of surrounding atom =5 -3 =2The bond angle in sp2 hybridisation shape is 1200 and in IF3, its having two anlge three F with 1200 and othertwo lone pair with 900 That is why BF3 is having higher bond angle.
