The process, by which air is drawn in from the atmosphere into the lungs and forced out from the lungs back into the atmosphere is known as breathing.
It involves two steps-inhalation and exhalation. One complete breath involves both steps.
The breath rate in normal adults is 12-18times per minute. Breath rate depends upon the state of the body(moving or resting) that is controlled by respiratory centres.
The breathing rate of a person increases while performing physical activities such as exercise, running, weightlifting, etc.
When the breathing rate increases, more oxygen is inhaled into the lungs.
In the presence of oxygen, more glucose molecules are oxidised to release energy and carbon dioxide.
To cope with the extra demand breathing rate of a person increases to 40-60 times per minute.
