Question

Why does Carbon form covalent bonds?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Carbon has four electrons in the outermost shell.
  2. To attain noble gas configuration, Carbon either lose four electrons or gain four electrons which is not possible due to its small size.
  3. To overcome the problem, Carbon shares it 4 valence electrons with other elements to form a covalent bond.
  4. The compounds formed by sharing of electrons are known as Covalent compounds.
  5. Therefore, Carbon acquires stability by forming a covalent bond.
