Question

Why does Carbon show a high tendency towards catenation?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The self-linking property of Carbon leading to the formation of long chains of Carbons, branched-chain of Carbon atoms, and rings of Carbon atoms is called Catenation.
  2. Carbon shows a high tendency towards catenation because Carbon has a smaller size which makes the C-C bonds strong.
  3. Carbon can form almost infinitely regular covalent bonds with other Carbon atoms.
  4. For example, Carbon atoms can form straight chains, branched chains, and rings.
